If Not Now, When?

There are so many great ideas about how people can improve on our country, our cities and our schools. I’ve enjoyed many conversations where I’ve thought, “wow, they should really get involved and make a difference.” Making a difference may sound cliché, however it’s true.

Mahatma Gandhi said, “be the change that you wish to see in the world.” Gandhi’s purpose centered on the fight for freedom of India from Great Britain using non-violent means, and passive resistance. His values drove him to “be the change” in a peaceful and cooperative manner, collaborating with people from different religions and caste systems.

So what are the steps if one way to “make a difference” is to run for local political office?

First, what is your why? What is that idea that would make our school board, our city, our state or our country better for those that live in that area? Why would you be a better solution to the incumbent, or to others that are also planning to run for that same elected office?

Second, what is your story. What – from your experience or your background – can help explain to the voter why you are the better candidate for the office you are seeking? Developing your story is one of the critical steps to a successful campaign. If you don’t tell your story, someone else will.

So the question becomes, if not now, when? What is holding you back from taking that first step?

Many of the hurdles that you may think of, can be overcome if the desire is there. Not sure you have the money to run a campaign? Building a fundraising plan and budget will help you figure that out. Not sure if you have the “team” to make a campaign happen, you may be surprised to learn they are there and waiting for you to ask. With the proper guidance, you can develop a campaign strategy roadmap before you even ask for your first check, or think about what color your yard signs may be.

True Blue Strategy can assist in figuring out that first step, or working with you and your team to provide full campaign management through your election. Schedule a time to chat today.
